PM Modi aims to establish India as a global leader in Green Hydrogen production
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s ambition to establish itself as a global center for green hydrogen production, utilization, and export.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission is boosting industry, infrastructure, investment, and innovation. We are funding state-of-the-art research and development. Academic institutions and industry are forming partnerships. We are encouraging entrepreneurs and start-ups operating in this field,” he stated.
PM Modi was speaking at the International Conference on Green Hydrogen India 2024, which was put on by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), and the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.
There is significant potential for developing a green jobs ecosystem,” PM Modi remarked. “To support this, we are also focusing on skill development for our youth in this sector.”
He emphasized that the effects of climate change are being experienced now. “There is an increasing awareness that climate change is not a distant issue but a current reality. The time for action is immediate. Energy transition and sustainability have become crucial topics in global policy discussions,” he said.
PM Modi continued, “Humanity has faced numerous challenges in the past, and we have always overcome them through collective and innovative solutions. It is this same spirit of collaborative and innovative action that will lead us to a sustainable future. Together, we can achieve anything. Let us strive to accelerate the advancement and implementation of green hydrogen.
PM Modi emphasized that India is not resting on its climate action accomplishments.
“We were the first among G20 nations to meet our Paris Agreement commitments on green energy, achieving this 9 years ahead of the 2030 target. Over the past decade, India’s installed non-fossil fuel capacity has grown by nearly 300%, and our solar energy capacity has surged by over 3,000%. However, we are not complacent with these achievements. We are committed to enhancing existing solutions,” he stated.
Green hydrogen is emerging as a key player in the global energy landscape due to its potential to decarbonize sectors that are challenging to electrify.
Industries such as refineries, fertilizers, steel production, and heavy-duty transportation will benefit significantly.
Green hydrogen also offers a solution for storing excess renewable energy. India has already introduced the National Green Hydrogen Mission in 2023, PM Modi noted.
