Justice Manmohan took the oath of office as a Supreme Court judge
On Thursday, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna administered the oath of office to former Delhi High Court Chief Justice Manmohan, officially making him a judge of the Supreme Court.
The swearing-in ceremony took place in the Supreme Court, with CJI Khanna leading the event.
With this appointment, the Supreme Court’s working strength has now increased to 33 judges, just one short of the sanctioned strength of 34.
Justice Manmohan’s elevation was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on November 28, and after receiving the Centre’s approval, his appointment was notified on December 3.
Justice Manmohan, a graduate of Modern School, Barakhamba Road, pursued his BA (Hons) in History from Hindu College at the University of Delhi. He completed his LLB in 1987 from the Campus Law Centre, DU, and became an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi the same year.
He practiced primarily in the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court, handling cases related to civil, criminal, constitutional, taxation, arbitration, trademark, and service matters. He also served as a senior panel advocate for the Centre in both courts.
Designated a senior advocate by the Delhi High Court on January 18, 2003, Justice Manmohan was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court on March 13, 2008, and later became a permanent judge on December 17, 2009.
He served as the acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court from November 9, 2023, and officially assumed the role of Chief Justice on September 29, 2024.
