The Maharashtra government has raised the vehicle registration fee for VIP numbers, also known as “choice numbers,” to nearly ₹18 lakh, which is roughly the price of a mid-size SUV. Following the latest price hike, the highly coveted VIP number “0001” will now cost ₹6 lakh in areas with high demand.

The cost for four-wheelers wishing to use the number “0001” will increase from the current₹3 lakh to₹5 lakh. According to a notification from the transport department, the fee for two- and three-wheelers would double from the current ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh.

In high-demand areas like Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban, Pune, Thane, Raigad, Aurangabad, Nashik, and Kolhapur, the VIP fee for the “0001” number will increase to ₹6 lakh from the previous ₹4 lakh for vehicles with four or more wheels. If this number is unavailable in the current series for a specific vehicle type and needs to be assigned from another series, the revised “three-time basic fee” will be ₹15 lakh for vehicles with four or more wheels and ₹3 lakh for two- and three-wheelers.

The latest price revisions indicate that any out-of-series numbers will now cost nearly ₹18 lakh in major cities like Mumbai and Pune, which is comparable to the price of a mid-size SUV. Previously, the fee was ₹12 lakh, a sum that entities like Reliance Industries paid for such numbers when opting for them “out of series” in recent years.

As a relief, the state government has now permitted the transfer of these VIP numbers to immediate family members, including spouses, sons, and daughters, marking a change from the previous restriction on such transfers.

The Maharashtra government has identified 240 VIP numbers in each registration series, with notable numbers like 0009, 0099, 0999, 9999, and 0786, in addition to 0001, also experiencing a fee increase to₹2.5 lakh, up from₹1.5 lakh for four-wheelers and vehicles with more wheels, and₹50,000 for two- and three-wheelers, up from the existing ₹20,000.

The costs for other well-known numbers have also been altered. Instead of the current fees of₹70,000 and₹25,000 for two-wheelers from₹15,000, the new charge for 16 such numbers is₹1 lakh for four-wheelers.

Additionally, for 49 other numbers, the fee has been raised to₹70,000 from the existing₹50,000 for four-wheelers and to₹15,000 for two- and three-wheelers.

For another set of 189 registration numbers, including 0011, 0022, 0088, 0200, 0202, 4242, 5656, and 7374, the revised fees are now ₹25,000 for four-wheelers and ₹6,000 for two-wheelers and vehicles with more than two wheels.

The government has increased the amount of time that car owners have to produce a vehicle with a reserved number from the existing 30 days to six months, in their favor.

Government vehicles will now have VIP number reservations, while special orders may be used to obtain an exemption. If a fee is paid, such vehicles can be allocated from any current series.

The fee increase is anticipated to generate additional revenue for the state transport department, which reported earnings of ₹139.20 crore from the issuance of registration numbers in 1,83,794 cases during the 2017-18 financial year.
