Mamata Banerjee Calls for UN Peacekeepers in Bangladesh Amid Violence, Seeks PM Modi’s Help
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for the deployment of a United Nations peacekeeping force in Bangladesh amid the ongoing violence. Additionally, she urged Prime Minister Modi to step in and protect the nation’s religious minority.
“We have families and loved ones in Bangladesh. While we respect India’s stance, we condemn religious-based atrocities anywhere in the world and urge the Union government and Prime Minister to step in,” CM Banerjee stated.
She also discussed the situation with the head of ISKCON’s Kolkata unit, expressing her concerns. “If Indians are attacked in Bangladesh, we cannot accept it. We can bring our people back and the Government of India should take the issue to the United Nations to request a peacekeeping force for Bangladesh,” she added.
Mamata emphasized her government’s humanitarian efforts, including rescuing Bangladeshi fishermen who accidentally crossed into Indian waters.
Religious minorities, particularly Hindus, have been facing persecution by radical groups in Bangladesh. Hindu Monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu was arrested on sedition charges after speaking out against the violence towards Hindus. His arrest sparked protests in Chittagong, where a lawyer was reportedly killed in the chaos.
