Outrage as Khalistan Supporters Attack Hindu Temple in Canada; Foreign Minister Calls Incident “Deeply Concerning”
The recent attack by Khalistani supporters on a Hindu temple and members of the Hindu community in Canada has drawn global criticism. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar reacted strongly, calling the incident “extremely worrying.” The attack comes when India-Canada relations are strained, further complicating diplomatic ties. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also spoken out against the attack, with the Canadian government facing increased pressure to address the situation.
In a statement on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Jaishankar, who is currently on an official visit to Australia, condemned the violent actions by Khalistani protesters who displayed separatist flags at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton near Toronto. Jaishankar expressed his condemnation in a social media post, stating, “I strongly denounce the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. The cowardly efforts to intimidate our diplomats are equally disturbing. Such acts of violence will not weaken India’s resolve. We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold law and order.”
The incident took place on Monday during a consulate camp held by the Indian High Commission at the Brampton temple, where Khalistani supporters protested, waving separatist flags and assaulting Indians present. Videos of the attack have circulated widely on social media, showing Khalistani supporters confronting and attacking members of the Indian community. Following the incident, Hindu and other minority communities in Canada voiced concerns about their safety, while opposition leaders in Canada denounced the violence, calling it unacceptable. Prime Minister Trudeau also condemned the incident and assured that action would be taken against those responsible.
On the same day, India’s Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement condemning the violence, urging Canada to take legal action against the perpetrators. The ministry further called on the Canadian government to protect all places of worship from such acts.
