PM Modi Embarks on Landmark Two-Day Visit to Kuwait, the First by an Indian PM in 43 Years
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a two-day visit to Kuwait, following an invitation from Sheikh Meshaal Al Ahmad Al Jabar Al Sabah, the Deputy Emir of Kuwait. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Kuwait in 43 years. In a social media post before his departure, PM Modi emphasized that India and Kuwait not only share strong trade and energy partnerships but also have mutual interests in peace, security, and stability in the West Asia region. He highlighted the longstanding historical ties between the two nations.
PM Modi expressed that his visit aims to further strengthen bilateral relations, and he is set to meet with the Emir, Crown Prince, and Prime Minister of Kuwait. Upon his arrival in Kuwait, the Prime Minister will engage with the Indian diaspora in the evening. He will also attend the opening ceremony of the Arabian Gulf Cup.
The last visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Kuwait was in 1981, when Indira Gandhi traveled there. In 2009, then Vice President Hamid Ansari visited Kuwait. India and Kuwait have a long history of trade, with exchanges of dates and horses predating the discovery of oil in Kuwait. The ongoing visit is expected to focus on key discussions around energy, trade, investment, and cultural ties. Preparations are underway for the ‘Hala Modi’ event at the Sheikh Saad Al Abdullah Sports Complex, where PM Modi will address the Indian community in Kuwait.
