PM Narendra Modi holds a meeting with Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu at Hyderabad House in Delhi on Monday. Known for his pro-China stance, Muizzu is on a five-day visit to India aimed at repairing the island nation’s relations with New Delhi, following the diplomatic turmoil caused by his ministers’ controversial comments about PM Modi.
Muizzu’s trip comes at a time when the Maldives is facing a financial crisis, worsened by declining foreign currency reserves.
After arriving in India on Sunday, Mohamed Muizzu met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Jaishankar conveyed his delight in welcoming the President to India for the state visit. According to a news release from the Maldives President’s Office, President Dr. Muizzu thanked the Indian government for the cordial welcome he and his party received upon their arrival.
Today, he received a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed upon their arrival at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Prior to this, they paid their respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in New Delhi. After honoring the Mahatma at the memorial, Muizzu signed the visitors’ book at Rajghat.
He is scheduled to engage in bilateral discussions with PM Modi at Hyderabad House in the national capital.
President Muizzu, along with the First Lady of Maldives, arrived in India on Sunday for his inaugural bilateral visit to the country.
