The race for the U.S. presidential election has intensified, with recent polls showing no clear majority for either candidate. As the campaign reaches its final stretch with voting set for Tuesday, the focus has shifted to the swing states. Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are well aware of the importance of these battlegrounds, leading both to concentrate their campaign efforts there. The U.S. has 538 electoral college votes, and the candidate who secures 270 of them wins the election. According to the latest polls, the final outcome will likely be decided by seven key swing states: Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia.

Understanding Swing States

In the U.S. presidential election, swing states or battleground states are those that could lean toward either the Democratic or Republican party. While many states traditionally support a specific party, swing states are unpredictable, making the race there highly competitive. Candidates from both parties invest more heavily in time and resources in these regions during the campaign. Swing states are not predetermined by any rule and are identified based on voter patterns during the election. This year’s swing states are Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia.

Harris and Trump in Tight Competition Across Swing States

Surveys by The New York Times and Siena College indicate that Kamala Harris holds an edge in North Carolina and Georgia, while her earlier lead in Pennsylvania has turned into a deadlock. Trump, meanwhile, appears strong in Arizona. Polls suggest a close race in Michigan, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. However, the margins are slim across all seven swing states, and the balance could shift in favor of either candidate on election day.
