Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Electoral Officer, PK Pole, announced on Friday that they will be organizing “green elections,” where approximately 10-12 plants will be planted at each polling station during the forthcoming assembly elections in the Union Territory.

PK Pole highlighted that this initiative aims to address the increasing temperatures and the issue of global warming.

“The necessary security measures are in place. We are focusing on green elections, as environmental concerns are growing globally. Rising temperatures and global warming are real challenges, and 10-12 plants will be planted at every polling station,” Pole stated to ANI.

He further mentioned that the home voting facility, first introduced during the recent Lok Sabha elections, will also be available for the Assembly elections.

Pole remarked, “Home voting services will be provided to enhance voting accessibility for elderly citizens and individuals with disabilities.” Additionally, voter facilitation centres are being set up to ensure that polling staff can also cast their votes.”

The elections will be conducted in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the vote counting scheduled for October 8.

Since Article 370 was repealed, Kashmir has not had assembly elections before. In Jammu and Kashmir, there are ninety Assembly constituencies, of which seventy are reserved for SCs and seventy for STs.

The Indian Election Commission reports that 88.06 lakh voters are eligible to vote in Jammu and Kashmir. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won 28 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 25, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) won 15, and the Congress won 12 in the last Assembly elections.
